Subtract the buses, trucks, and taxicabs,
the cop cars and delivery vans,
and there wouldn't be much traffic left
on Union Square, and when the rest's subtracted,
too, and you are left alone with just a pedestrian
or two, then at last you will be able
to spread your wares on your folding table
and sell them to the passers-by
who will be wearing muumuus
and dashikis dyed the color
of those vanished taxicabs. Buskers
will sing songs of their native
Antarctica: "Set the captive chickens
free!" or maybe "New York City is My Kind of Town,"
or "Let's Turn the Whole World
Upside-Down!" Sometimes the authorities
will round them up or shoot them down or
vice versa. Come, dear friend, and you can
hide with me in a cellar that I know.
