Just a few ideas...

What about a News/Ads forum similar to the one on RPGnet?

Small press publishers (and authors) could post press releases of their latest books/magazines and other updates. There are quite a few small press horror and sci-fi publishers that might like a place to let fans know of new products.

In the same line of thought, perhaps a Sales/Trades forum?

If people want to trade books or have ebay auctions of their DVD collections, this might be a good place to find other fans of sci-fi, fantasy & horror.

What about a Writer's Workshop?

Folks could post fiction and other writing samples for review/criticism and share advice on getting published or working with self-publishing options. This could also serve as a freelance resource where small press publishers could post open calls for anthologies, magazines, etc.

Anyway, just a few ideas. Are you thinking of have a separate forum for review discussion similar to the one on RPGnet eventually?

Matt

The new forum ideas all sound good. I'm a bit leery of splitting up the forums now when we're trying to get critical mass on what we have. However the ads/news one sounds like it might help draw people, so I'm going to think about that next week.

As for sales/trades: before I do that I want to get some trade functionality up and running through the index, to try and push that at a primary trade mechanism for, at least, books.

As for reviews: when the forums start turning over more rapidly, the reviews will probably be the first things taken out of the forums as they exist now, and moved to their own area, as you suggest. Right now, I'm hoping they'll generate conversation.

Thanks for the thoughts!

I know of a few small press publishers (books and a magazine or two) that would probably like to post updates/releases in a news forum.

I've plugged Xenagia on the Permuted Press and Laurell K. Hamilton forums as well as a couple of sci-fi/horror writers groups. I've got a few more in mind that I hope to get to this weekend.

Matt

I'll see if I can port the whole news system over here next week, including a forum to house things.

Great! Thanks!

This is going to sound ridiculous, but it has been on my mind and I wanted to throw it out there.

In Other Media on RPG.net a lot of folk have enjoyed doing character vs. character polls, but those haven't been allowed for some time. While it's a silly sort of thing, mentioning over there that it's allowed here might bring a lot of folk over. It also generates discussion of geeky media characters.

I know - silly. But it may help obtain the critical mass to help the forum thrive.

I certainly hope we suddenly don't get an influx of those threads over here. There was a pretty good reason they were banned over there.

There has to be a way get interesting discussion about characters without resorting to "who'd win?" over and over.
