Browse by author, sort by book title.
When you do a search by author, leave out the publisher. For books, at least for me, I have no interest in the publisher. I'm looking for other books by the author and want to list, for example all the books done by "Adams". That should give me Douglas and Robert and any others.

I though this existed. I guess I never programmed it because it's a bit trickier due to the database layout. In any case, noted.
sort by book title. That's "No sort".
When you do a search by author, leave out the publisher.Something like that is on my list. The current methodology for the searches is a holdover from the gaming index, where publisher was more important than author instead of vice-versa.
Generally, thanks for the comments. Hopefully I can get #1 and #3 done next week sometime.
Nothing better to do tonight than approve books? :D
I'm watching Young Frankenstein while entering books.
Thanks for your work btw of course.

I don't know if I'm doing something wrong but when I try to select "Own" for the Phantom Regiments anthology, it won't save it. The others turn a dark green but this one doesn't change.
Carl
A problem or maybe a misunderstanding. The two anthologies I entered had articles from other anthologies. I selected that the articles were the same expecting them to still show up in the anthology list for the book I entered but when I checked, the two from Phantom Regiment weren't there and the one from Alternate Worlds.
Another issue. When I entered the stories into Phantom Regiment, the first one was the Introduction which also had a title. Each story afterwards had everything reset to the default values. But when I entered the stories for Alternate Worlds, each story came with the default set to the book default.
Carl
I entered "Who Can Replace a Man?" without realizing until I went to look for the published date that it was a collection of his short stories. I tried to change it but it wouldn't let me.

They should have shown up; the system should do exactly what you expect. Let me know the names of the articles and the anthology where they didn't appear, and I'll see if I can traceback what happened.

I suspect you hit a bug that shows up when I release a book too early.

When were you trying to change it? I just released it, so I'm a bit confused here ...

Could have been a system lockup or something when you were trying. It's AJAX, which means that if it fails, it's not descriptive. If you're still having the problem, let me know which page you're on when you try to mark its status.

I was trying to get my desk cleared of book covers to scan before I rebooted my machine to reinstall a DVD-ROM so that I could play a new video game I was handed to review. Haven't quite gotten there yet;).
Thanks for your work btw of course.
Thanks for the book entry too!

This all appears to have been entirely user air on my part. I think I just reconnected the two articles in question.

I just didn't articulate it well is all. I didn't know what the process was to change a book entry from a Novel to an Anthology so I can add in the short story titles. So I was just letting you know that I'd made a mistake in case there was something in the background that needed to be done. I didn't know whether it was possible for me as a user to change a book.

It didn't work for either of the anthologies I entered:

That's peculiar, because I can mark ownership on either of them, at least from the pages you note. I'll have to look further on Monday why your account is different.
While I'm at it, what browser are you using on what OS?

I thought of that earlier but I hadn't tried it yet. I'm on Safari on OS X 10.4.10.
But let me check the other laptop, hold on...
Yea, just tried it on Firefox on my wife's XP laptop and it let me "Own" one of the books so it's Mac specific :)

Hmm, somehow I'm logged in to the Book Index as Shaidus (or something). Is there a log out feature?
Carl
Edit: Found it. I had to go into a book and it's towards the bottom. Thanks.
Another question. When a book consists of multiple novels, how is it entered? It's not an anthology as I understand it (a bunch of short stories) but the three novels reprinted as a single large book.
Nopalgarth for instance consists of "Nopalgarth", "Son of the Tree", and "The Houses of Iszm" and another; Battle Circle which is the name of the trilogy consisting of Sos the Rope, Var the Stick, and Neq the Sword combined into a single large book.

It's an omnibus. Just enter the omnibus, and then when the original novels get entered they can be put in as contents.
For example:

Ok cool, thanks.
Shelf one finished. Half done with shelf two. 38 shelves to go. It'll be a long winter :)

Ok cool, thanks.
They need to go in as full novels, just like you'd entered anything else, not the short-form "article". You can either just leave them be, or else try and get sufficient information from Amazon or elsewhere, to enter one of the original printings.

Ah, so while I can enter the one book as an "omnibus", I can't just add them as an article of the omnibus yet. Someone has to actually enter the novel as a standalone novel and then they can be cross-referenced to the omnibus. Got it.
Thanks again :)

I just made it work a little better, but this was already in the index.
It's on this page:
http://index.xenagia.net/browse.phtml
Choose "contributor".
At some point it'll need to be split up better to deal with different types of contributors, but for now there's just a minority of editors amidst many authors.

And you can now browse for awards too, something I've been meaning to do for a while.

More important to my mind is making it list them in the 'proper' (ie alphabetic by last name) order.

This will be 95% working when the code syncs from the main codebase tomorrow morning.
I'm having some problems with Sr.'s, II's, and III's, but regular authors work as do Jr's.
