Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think the last Dr. Who broadcast on SciFi (Daleks in Manhattan, Friday 7/27) had a commercial for Torchwood. IIRC, it will be coming to BBC America in early September--maybe the 8th or 9th?

Yep, that's what I've heard. From what I've seen BBC America isn't a widespread basic channel, but at least this should mean we'll get a DVD in the fall, I hope.

Actually, Torchwood will premeire in the US on September 17! It will be on HDNet (http://www.hd.net) at 7 p.m. eastern. Eps will air weekly. And it's in hi-def too, so the picture and sound will be amazing. And best of all, no commercials!

That's interesting about the HDNet--though personally I don't have HD, so it won't do me any good. The BBC America website is still saying that they will be showing it starting September 8 at 9 p.m.

It will be in both places, but HDNet will be of higher quality.

And finally, here's the scoop for those of us who don't get the premium stations:

The first-season DVD of the BBC's Doctor Who spinoff series, Torchwood, streets on Jan. 8, 2008, and will include 10 behind-the-scenes featurettes on seven discs.

The $80 seems extraordinarily pricey for 13 episodes; that's HBO prices. But that's what Netflix is for.

Apparently the BBCA premiere of Torchwood did gangbusters:

I finally got to see this about the middle of the week. On the whole, I was pretty happy with it. The links to Dr. Who episodes were well-handled and the characters were pretty engaging--at least Captain Jack and Gwen Cooper were; I really didn't get much of a feeling for the others. It's also nice to see a Who-verse show admitting that they are in Wales.

I approve of this television broadcast known among humans as "Torchwood". The premier episode possessed non-trivial entertainment value.

Having seen the second episode now, I'd say that it doesn't quite live up to the promise of the pilot, but I suppose that's to be expected. I found the tone a bit inconsistent, veering from, well, rather leering to 'people are dying, it's horrible.' But I'm willing to keep tuning in.

Unfortunately the show continues to do that. There are some really good episodes and there are some times when you sit there going "what the hell were the writers trying to convey with that?"

Agreed. The characters doing stuff so stupid it'd leave a Star Trek redshirt scratching his head is getting to Mrs. Moonthunder and me.

For those who haven't caught the BBC broadcasts: it releases on DVD on January 22 in region 1 (e.g., the US).
