Oh, I'm lagging on this show now, having just seen the latest episode 6 days after it aired. I'd probably be tempted to give up on it if I didn't suspect this is the last season.
I'm really amazed by how totally the show has reinvented itself. It's pretty literally not the show it used to be. I'm actually happy with the tighter cast. The last few seasons sort of flailed because of their inability to use all of their cast members on any individual episode, and I think that particularly hurt Purdy's plot (which fragmented to the point where it was impossible to follow) and Sarah's plot (which was pretty much nonexistent).
Though I'm not entirely happy with the soap-operatic center the show has gained, in the Johnny-Sarah-J.J. triad we're getting more character development and important moments than we've seen in years.
Sheriff Scully bugs the heck out of me though.
As for the episode itself: meh. J.J. might have powers or not, and no particularly good use was made of the return to the original carnival.
