On Friday I just happened to pick up a series of three little comics digests from the library for a series called Sentinel.

This was originally one of Marvel Comic's short-lived "Tsunami" line aimed at younger kids. It's the story of a kid who's an outsider in school and what happens when he stumbles upon and repairs a giant robot ... who's also programmed to hunt down and destroy mutants.

The storytelling is good with wonderful characterization of a group of a half-dozen kids. It doesn't offer easy answer, and in fact as often as not it seems like the protagonist is making more problems than he's fixing. The art is all specifically done in the manga style and it really works for the story that's being told.

If you like somewhat emotional coming of age comics, these are highly recommended. And, if you're not lucky enough to pick them up at your local library, they're just $8 each, which is a deal.

Sadly, I think this might be all the Sentinel there is, because Marvel tried twice and failed to find an audience. Some questions are ultimately unanswered, but there's still decent closure for the series.
