Dabel Brothers Publishing announced today that they will adapt Robert Jordan’s bestselling Wheel of Time series, which has sold more than 14 million copies in North America alone, into comic book format. The first issue is scheduled to release in December 2008.

Should be interesting. I picked up some of the Dresden Files and Frankenstein comics at the DB booth at Wizard World Chicago this past weekend and talked shop a bit with some of the folks there.

Wheel of Time will be an interesting adaptation to comic book format. I wonder how well it will cross over.

A skilled adapter does a great job of compressing a lengthier book into a much shorter comic. I was recently skimming some of the old Corum adaptations as I read the books and I was amazed how they dropped full chapters into a single page or even just a couple of panels.

Given that one of the biggest troubles with the Wheel of Time is its bloat, they could get down to the diamond core and come up with a great comic.

I feel bad for the artist who gets stuck trying to differentiate the roughly 8 million different characters in those books. Not to mention drawing panel after panel of women tugging on their braids.

Good comic book adaptations of fantasy novels are not impossible though. I've enjoyed Devil's Due's adaptations of the Drizzt novels and the first Dragonlance trilogy. And of course the two Hedge Knight mini series have been excellent.
