Well, CBS is the one doing announcements today.

It looks like Jericho got cancelled. The comment was that it never recovered from its winter hiatus. Meanwhile Ghost Whisperer, a show that I've never seen because it looked just like several others from these last few years, got renewed.

I haven't seen anything about new CBS shows in the genre yet.

One of CBS' new genre shows is Moonlight, which sounds like it fits into the very familiar urban-fantasy-detective genre:

The vampire-themed pilot Moonlight (formerly known as Twilight) has received a series order from CBS for the fall television season, the network announced. The series stars Alex O'Loughlin (The Invisible) as a brooding private investigator who happens to be a vampire.

It's set to broadcast after Ghost Whisperer, which is presumably a nice 1-2 lineup.

Moonlight sounds interesting. I haven't seen any good vampire stuff in awhile - Angel is the most recent, and that was more a superhero series than a vampire series.

I think Jericho really needs that second season. I'm sad to see it miss out. I blame the network, though, as I always do.

Whereas I blame people for not watching it. Or rather those who are part of the ratings system.

Given that this show was my second favourite U.S. show of the year (#1 being Heroes), I'm really annoyed it didn't get renewed. If the Dresden Files also fails to get renewed about the only U.S. show I'll still be watching will be Heroes.

Yeah it'll be Heroes and Supernatural for me and not much else. Especially since SG-1 is ending soon.

I'm not sure how I feel about retreading the vamp detective show. I'm mostly just hoping it's not "Touched by a Vampire".

How the hell did Ghost Whisperer get renewed? I've been unfortunate enough to see a couple and its like an episode of Afterlife or Medium with all possible conflict and drama taken out.

Title sequence

"I'm being haunted!"

Ghost Whisperer
"Yes you are, you're not mad. But I'll speak to your ghost"

Random spod
"You can do that?"

Ghost Whisperer
"Yes, but its a secret"

Ghost
"Whoooooooo! I'm at peace now"

CBS now claims that they're going to wrap up Jericho in some way. That's one of those I'll-believe-it-when-I-see-it sort of things, but there you go.

To the fans of Jericho:

We have read your emails over the past few days and have been touched by the depth and passion with which you have expressed your disappointment. Please know that canceling a television series is a very difficult decision. Hundreds of people at the Network, the production company and the incredibly-talented creative team worked very hard to build and serve the community for this show -- both on-air and online. It is a show we loved too.

Thank you for supporting Jericho with such passion. We truly appreciate the commitment you made to the series and we are humbled by your disappointment. In the coming weeks, we hope to develop a way to provide closure to the compelling drama that was the Jericho story.

Sincerely,

Nina Tassler, President of CBS Entertainment

My wife and daughter really enjoy 'Ghost Whisperer', and I might watch it if I'm in the room. At least it seems much better than 'Medium', and if nothing else, 'Ghost Whisperer' has had something of an ongoing metaplot that's been relatively interesting. Just not my cup of tea, though.

If anyone is looking for more vampire shows, there's always 'Blood Ties' on the Lifetime network on Sunday nights. It's based on Tanya Huff's Vicky Nelson books. Being on Lifetime, they tend to play up the romance...but it's been watchable, at least.

Some closure is great news. I would love some resolution to the cliffhanger of the season finale.

I was really hoping for a second season. Writing-wise, by the end of the first season they had finally started to hit all the right notes. Characters just fit well, and there wasn't some of the awkward fake crises that hit the first part of the season.

But...everyone was watching American Idol instead.

I agree. I almost gave up on the show when it got a bit too soapish but I am glad I hung on till the end. It really turned around in the last 7 or 8 episodes.

I'm willing to believe CBS since they last time they had a show that didn't quite make it (American Gothic) the broadcaster finished airing the remaining episodes like a mini-series (mutliple episodes over three days).

Fans of Jericho are apparently trying to save the show by sending nuts to the network. Seriously:
http://www.nutsonline.com/jericho

Back in ye-olde Roswell days, a similar tabasco-mailing effort was largely credited with saving the show, but the by the time of the fan efforts related to Angel, the general consensus among network executives was that rabid fans didn't correspond to either ratings or advertisers.

Still, hope springs eternal.

Apparently they're digging up Angel folks for Moonlight:

David Greenwalt , co-creator/executive producer of the vampire drama Angel, has been tapped to serve as executive producer/show runner on CBS' new drama series Moonlight, which has a similar theme, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Well, I don't think the peanuts did it, but ...

The Hollywood Reporter confirmed a report (http://www.scifi.com/scifiwire/index.php?category=0&id=41814) by TV Guide columnist Michael Ausiello that CBS is in talks to bring back the post-apocalyptic drama Jericho, with a seven-episode mid-season order.

There are no deals in place, and there are several hurdles to overcome, but the fact that the network is moving to resurrect the canceled freshman series is a testament to the legions of loyal fans who have been relentless in their campaign for saving the show, including sending tens of thousands of pounds of nuts to top CBS executives, the trade paper reported.

Talks are under way with cast members of the CBS Paramount Network TV series, including star Skeet Ulrich, to return. The network is said to have options on all actors, but deals need to be modified to reflect the unusual timing and size of the order. Proposed budget reductions would lead to some of Jericho's characters not returning for the abbreviated second season.

Huzzah!

I certainly have my fingers crossed the deals can be done. I really liked that show, and with none of the newly announced shows interesting me I'll need something to watch.

Jericho's back:

Over the past few weeks you have put forth an impressive and probably unprecedented display of passion in support of a prime time television series. You got our attention; your emails and collective voice have been heard.

As a result, CBS has ordered seven episodes of “Jericho” for mid-season next year. In success, there is the potential for more. But, for there to be more “Jericho,” we will need more viewers.

It's been a pretty rare show that's continued on from this sort of setback, but at least they'll get to finish up their plots.

Apparently they're digging up Angel folks for Moonlight:

If you haven't had a chance to see Greenwalt's non-Angel series, Miracles (which stars Skeet Ulrich) it is very much worth a viewing, and it should still be out on DVD.
