So far I'm disappointed with this summer batch of blockbuster SF&F movies, and so far I primarily blame it on all the sequels.
I've seen most of them so far:
Pirates of the Carribean III was a good thrill ride with a few good lines, but largely the story didn't hold together. Good Saturday matinee material.
Shrek the Third had some laughs, but just wasn't magical for me, and the plot again seems to be made by committee. Matinee material also.
Spiderman III had one too many villains, and had some downright wrong character situations (Peter doing the disco, and MJ not telling him that she was attacked by the Goblin), and I should have waited for the DVD.
I've not seen 28 Days yet as I can't seem to get 28 Hours in the video store, but I've heard this sequel is not as good.
I don't even want to think about The Hills Have Eyes II.
I've still got hope that Transformers will be good -- it at least isn't exactly a sequel.
I loved the original appearance of Silver Surfer in the early 70s, so I'm both psyched to see the Fantastic Four sequel, but given the quality of the other sequels this summer and of the first FF I'm quite worried.
The only sequel I'm both looking forward to and have good expectations is the new Harry Potter and Order of the Phoenix, but I think that is largely due to the author JK Rowling.
For the price of producing a single blockbuster, we could get 5-10 movies of the caliber of 300, Bridge to Terabithia (an under appreciated film), Korea's excellent The Host, The Astronaut Farmer (another unappreciated film), and of course the award-winning and fantastic Pan's Labyrinth. (Note that all of these were released in the spring of 2007 when the general public didn't have time to watch them).
So are you enjoying the sequels more then I am? Has there ever been a good summer sequel?
