View Full Version : Disappointed with Movie Sequels

So far I'm disappointed with this summer batch of blockbuster SF&F movies, and so far I primarily blame it on all the sequels.

I've seen most of them so far:

Pirates of the Carribean III was a good thrill ride with a few good lines, but largely the story didn't hold together. Good Saturday matinee material.
Shrek the Third had some laughs, but just wasn't magical for me, and the plot again seems to be made by committee. Matinee material also.
Spiderman III had one too many villains, and had some downright wrong character situations (Peter doing the disco, and MJ not telling him that she was attacked by the Goblin), and I should have waited for the DVD.
I've not seen 28 Days yet as I can't seem to get 28 Hours in the video store, but I've heard this sequel is not as good.
I don't even want to think about The Hills Have Eyes II.
I've still got hope that Transformers will be good -- it at least isn't exactly a sequel.
I loved the original appearance of Silver Surfer in the early 70s, so I'm both psyched to see the Fantastic Four sequel, but given the quality of the other sequels this summer and of the first FF I'm quite worried.
The only sequel I'm both looking forward to and have good expectations is the new Harry Potter and Order of the Phoenix, but I think that is largely due to the author JK Rowling.

For the price of producing a single blockbuster, we could get 5-10 movies of the caliber of 300, Bridge to Terabithia (an under appreciated film), Korea's excellent The Host, The Astronaut Farmer (another unappreciated film), and of course the award-winning and fantastic Pan's Labyrinth. (Note that all of these were released in the spring of 2007 when the general public didn't have time to watch them).

So are you enjoying the sequels more then I am? Has there ever been a good summer sequel?

Well...I've only seen Spiderman3 and Pirates 3 and I liked both of those, even if they were flawed films.

About the only other sequel I'll be seeing at the cinema is the Potter film (well...maybe also Oceans 13...I'll wait for reviews though). Everything else can wait for rental on Bluray/DVD.

I quite enjoyed the first FF film so I'm fairly excited about the second.

Course I thought Pirates had a really great story. It was just a bit more complicated than the previous films, but then given what they tried to tie up I'd have been surprised if it wasn't.

I've been similarly disappointed by these movies, but no one else I know around here seems to be. Good to know I'm not alone in this. 28 Days Later is the name of the original, BTW

I enjoyed the original FF but thought it wasn't a very good movie in a lot of ways. Just kind of ... absurd. The sequel, with the Silver Surfer, looks like it could actually be better than the first, while keeping the elements that made it fun. I'm cautiously optimistic.

Of the list, I've only seen 28 Weeks Later, and...man. Sigh.

I was impressed by Pirates of the Caribbean III, and found it far superior to the second film at least. Spiderman 3 was also, in my opinion, better than the second, if for no other reason than there was more character stake involved and the dialogue was slightly less Lucas-esque.

On the other hand, I'd like to see some non-franchise movies show up for once...
