There's an interview with Tim Kring, exec producer of Heroes, here:

My favorite bit was this, which talked about the structure of season two:

CCI: What do viewers have to look forward to in volume two?

TK: Volume two may not last an entire season. It will pick up a few of the questions that will be left hanging in volume one. But you can look forward to the introduction of a new character and a villain and the idea of the show having a kind of global feel is only increased in volume two.

CCI: When you say volume two will not be an entire season, do you mean you'll start volume three in the next season?

TK: Yes, volume three will start in the middle of the season or toward the end of the season. There is a complete season next year, with about 23 episodes, but the idea is that the show is told in volumes and each one is sort of looked at as one book in a series of books, and then we move on to another volume. This allows us to not get caught up in one giant story that needs to be dragged on. One of the lessons we've learned from other shows is that that you can't (let the show) get wrapped up so tightly around itself that it doesn't have any breathing room left. You can't introduce any new concepts because you're so busy on the freight train that is that story. The story becomes a big giant engine that gets harder and harder to hop off.

I'll believe it when I see it, but I think *not* locking themselves into one story each season can do a lot for the show.

One of the things that became important for us is this idea of revealing secrets. One of the main differences between Heroes and other shows is there's no one secret that is precious enough not to reveal.
Preach it brother!

On the other hand, I think this "more than one story a season" bit needs to be looked at cautiously... taken too far it smacks of what happened to Veronica Mars in its final season, although apparently serialized stories won't be completely abandoned...

I'd generally argue that the two semi-season mysteries in season 3 were stronger than the big bus crash mystery of season 2, which meandered and occasionally lost its way.

In any case, Veronica Mars definitely had suits telling them how to run the story. I got the impression from the interview that Pring was instead going to let the stories tell themselves to their natural lengths, not shortening them due to suits, but not lengthening them to fit 23 eps or else.

But I can understand the concern; if I heard that Heroes would never again have a season-long arc, I'd definitely be unhappy.

And to follow-up on Season 2, here's some casting news:

NBC has annonced that it has added six new cast members for the upcoming season of Heroes, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Joining the cast in recurring roles will be Barry Shabaka Henley, Holt McCallany, David Anders, Eriko Tamura, Lyndsy Fonseca and Dianna Agron.

As yet another followup on Season Two, here's some news on Season Two baddies:

Tim Kring, creator and executive producer of NBC's hit series Heroes, told journalists that the upcoming second season will introduce a few new bad guys. "There's a couple new villains," Kring said in a conference call on Aug. 2. "We're doing 11 episodes in a row that start on Sept. 24. And somewhere in that run of episodes we're going to introduce a very scary villain."

...

Kring said that season two's villians will make last year's look tame. Those who paid attention to the season finale already have a hint about one of them, he said.

I'm very happy to hear that season 2 won't be about Sylar again. As I told someone shortly after the finale, I hope that Sylar gets quietly nuked by the next villain, just to show how tough the next guy is.

(This is straight out of Buffy and the season 1/2 transition.)
