This is a good doughnut shop for viewing freaks
before their final self-destruction.
Early this morning. using the window
of the store next door as his mirror,
an elfen boy with mussed black hair
was studying his face with anxious horror,
stroking the thick dark stripes
on his beardless chin, adjusting the cigarette
over his ear, dissatisfied. At last, having done
what he could to look carelessly horrid,
he wandered off to where a bell tolled:
Forlorn! Forlorn!
He will have committed suicide before
he can cover up his ill-advised tattoo
with a beard, but in the meantime
he will have shown us others how far
is too far. Isn't it odd one doesn't see
living groundhogs come to sniff the roadkill?
They must not understand death at all.
