Such a dumb idea heaven: no story any more,
just one blast of pleasure than can't be
turned off, like one of those defective
car alarms that honk all night and the
batteries have a lifetime warranty:
your eternal lifetime.
What medieval theologian ever rubberstamped
that as Orthodox? So much more
agreeable the Jehovah's Witnesses' promise
to those not saved that they'll be dust,
insentient, at rest, the few chairs reserved
for the blessed long since assigned.
Let them sit in those chairs forever.
At what point do the Orthodox (supposing
that their lives are long) come to realize
they don't fancy having to live forever
or having seventy or however many
virgins always available
for divine hanky-panky, that death alone
is all they're after, one last lovely dawn
and then they're gone, not eternal bliss
but just this little cup of nothingness?
