The pool of our memories is polluted
with trace amounts of pharmaceuticals
just biding their time against the day
they can press the button inside some
mother minnow and make her spawn a minnow
monstrosity. In the same way there are
little towns extant in the swamps
of the Yucatan whose pyramids are rubble
now but whose vanished populations,
scawny and alert to new opportunities
in other territories, tattooed so as
to terrify the destined victims of their rapes
but actually rather congenial (yet how
otherwise are they to propogate their kind?),
will be working just across the street
at a fast-food chain that doesn't yet exist.
Of such as these is the web of history spun.
So enjoy your minnows while ye may.
They're only fresh, at best, a day.
