My review (http://sfsite.com/03a/fr267.htm) of Firefly Rain by Richard Dansky (http://www.richarddansky.com/) has been published on the SF Site (http://www.sfsite.com/).
Page by page, Dansky builds the tension. This is not a horror novel with much gore or many appearances by the overtly supernatural. Instead it slowly layers on just enough fear, just enough confusion, and just enough weirdness to keep you reading. The end, when it comes, falls quite neatly into place and left this reader chilled.
I’ve been a longtime fan of Dansky, from when he wrote and designed the Wraith: the Oblivion roleplaying game, which was an extremely creepy exploration of human psychology. His Orpheus is, in my opinion, one of the best published campaigns I’ve ever encountered for an RPG and I really hope to run it through one day (though sadly, Steve is not disposed to creepy gaming). I’ve also followed Dansky’s columns (http://www.storytellersunplugged.com/contributors/richard-dansky) for Storytellers Unplugged (http://www.storytellersunplugged.com/) for some time now, as well. I got really excited when I saw his novel on the list of books the SF Site had available and the actual experience of reading it lived up to expectations.
While it reads in some ways like a ‘first novel’ — which it is, unless you count media tie-ins — it absolutely reads like the first novel of a very promising author.
