for Jonathan McCullum, who was starved as an exchange student under the auspices of the American Field Service, whose lawyers have advised them not to comment in the matter
In a famine-based culture like that
of Coptic Egypt (they fast 200 days a year)
people will lie about the food they do eat,
much as anorectic girls will tell
their mothers that yes they've eaten
everything on their plates, that they are
stuffed and thank you it was delicious.
They enjoy watching others collude
in their slow suicide--the doubting smiles,
the fascinated acquiescence we all feel
for the saint high on his pillar. They possess
the secret wisdom of every long-term detainee
who knows we'd all be better off dead.
