Discounting Upton Sinclair as patently an attempt to turn this cultural-history quest into farce, I think the the Bosko and Bruno connection is actual, whether the phrase originated before and generated the name of Bosko's dog or not. (THe fact that Upton Sinclair actually owned a dog named Bruno seems to tbe the source of http://stat.livejournal.com/img/userinfo.gif (http://tomsdisch.livejournal.com/profile)tomsdisch (http://tomsdisch.livejournal.com/) 's imposition.
