Fox finished up the upfronts season this year by listing the new science-fiction that they're going to cancel if it's any good, so why bother watching it anyway.

New Amsterdam starts this Fall, Tuesdays at 8pm:

New Amsterdam. This is the story "of a New York homicide detective unlike any other" (Because we've never heard that before). John Amsterdam, back in 1642, saved the life of a Native American girl, but took a sword wound for his troubles. The girl in turn saved his life, conferring upon him immortality. Only Amsterdam's good friend, Omar, knows the truth, but he has a few secrets of his own. Things get even more weird as the Native American's prophesy about a soul mate starts to come true.

The Sarah Conner Chronicles has been delayed till Spring, Sunday at 9pm: This being Fox, and them already having pulled it back half a year, one wonders if they'll bother to show it at all:

We all know, or should know by now, about Skynet and Sarah Connor. No? John Connor? His enemy and then friend, you know, the guy who will be back? No? Come on, The Terminator? Good. This show takes place following Sarah's destruction of the liquid metal Terminator (Terminator 2: Judgment Day). She and John are fugitives, and enemies from the past, present, and future are always a threat. There is no fate but what we make of it. Let's make it a good one, folks.

And ends three Tuesdays later. Do they really believe nobody remembers Highlander?

Even given how easy on the eyes Summer Glau can be, that may not be such a bad idea. Basing a TV series off a successful movie hasn't worked in a long time -- in fact, it's been at least five years since I've seen something of that sort last longer than six episodes on broadcast. (Buffy was based on an incredibly unsuccessful movie, and Stargate has spent its entire life cycle in cable and syndication.)

I can imagine network staff meetings when looking over a pilot like this. "Why, a child of five could understand this premise! Miss Haynes, go get a child of five -- maybe she can explain it to me."

If it would pass muster with a network executive panel, I'm not watching it.

From the promo clips, I'm actually looking forward to New Amsterdam. It looks like it has a sense of humor, and I like the actor.

(Amsterdam at an AA meeting: "I haven't had a drink for 15,482 days...")

A Terminator running-man show could be excellent. This one probably won't be.

Everyone always complains about Fox killing shows before they have a chance to shine, but this is a new one ...

New Amsterdam has already been pulled from the Fall schedule, months before it was scheduled to air. Apparently they've decided to try it out in the Spring instead.

You really gotta admire Fox's ability to cancel shows.

New Amsterdam has now been pulled from Spring and put on hiatus, which is a pretty fancy way to say "DOA" in my experience:

No word of them cancelling Sarah Connor yet, but, y'know, it's Fox.

Here's some more info on New Amsterdam which reveals that Fox has pulled the plug on production halfway through the series:

That writer guesses that the episodes will be burned off mid-summer, indeed suggesting that it's dead, dead, dead.
