This far and no farther. Beyond this ledge
there's only water. You can feel
its chill already in the sand between
your toes. You'd need to be a creature
of the sea and breathe through gills to live
below the to and fro of the tides. So this
is as far as you can go. How many
squid and of what size do you think
it would take to disable a swimmer?
Are they equipped with venom-tipped
stingers like the tails of sting-rays,
or are those tails enough in themselves
to do the job? Only a few years ago
a manta plunged its tail, spearlike,
into the heart of Heath Ledger. No,
the ocean is not a safe place. Stay
where you'll keep dry. Heath Ledger died.
