In the same NYT there's a wonderful impossible 2008 paragraph that -- well, wouldn't it be fun to somehow shoot this back to Philip K. Dick in 1962 to show him he was (or was going to be) right, only not enough?
"On another evening I ran into the avatar of Annie Ok, the multimedia artist and self-described 'metaverse evangelist'. (She's on every virtual world from Gaia Online to Neopets, and even helped Brian Eno design his Second Life avatar."
(This from an article about VLES, a Second Life-style virtual Lower East Side where you can go in and out of actual clubs, bars, and galleries. The next paragraph starts "A few nights later I sat across from the real Ms. Ok at the Life Cafe on Avenue B...")
Of course maybe we DID -- Maybe I MYSELF just did -- send that graf back to PKD, and all the similar paragraphs in 60s SF that resulted derive ultimately from that accident or singularity. Who knows?
