Two recent movies relating to Alzheimer's set my gears in motion to do a story about the Eskimo Option, i.e. letting the tribal elders starve when they have ceased to be of economic use. Refusing to help provide for dear old dad or mom. It's something that seems never to be discussed, despite its inherent potential for High Drama. So I wrote my story, which wound up as a short-short, "Lear on the Heath."
When I read it aloud to my friend E, she raised various questions as to whether it would be legal to just turn the old folks out on the street. It turns out it depends on what state you live in. E. discovered some of the intricacies at some interesting websites, the best of which is called
billretires.blogspot.com
I commend it to the curious and anyone looking for seedlings of future high drama.
