My Posting about the new bookless world a week or two ago, which mentions NEA's dismaying booklet "To Read or Not to Read", scooped the New Yorker's article on the same theme in this week's issue (Winter Fiction). Which references other studies, even more interesting, on the neurophysiology of reading, and how it modifies our minds. If you don't have a subscription, then you surely can get to a library that does. Do!
