It strikes me that though there have been dramas that feature the conflict of Faith and Science (Inherit the Wind, Brecht's Galileo) I can't think of one that homes in on the essential conflict. Faith as a problem in and of itself. The enmity that many True Believers feel toward those whom they believe are bound for hell. My grandmother refused to deal with her daughter Lorraine once she'd married a divorced man. That was the Catholic position in her day. Muslims will kill their daughters if they ride in a car with an infidel or don't wear a veil or whatever. Or a child might simply refuse to attend services in the church the parent attends (as I did) and be thrown out on the street. I can think of fictions that portray parents who are Bigots to even a deranged degree (The Way of All Flesh, Gosse's Father and Son) but none that show the two sides in contention. Exile is the usual "solution" to the problem, but religion is usually accounted unassailable in itself, esp. in the war of the generations. Has there been no Ibsen for this issue? It would seem a natural for a YA book. Does any such book exist?
