For years I've tried to remember the names of two writers I'd read devoutly as a fifth or sixth grader. They'd written the Silver Chief series, and a series focused on the crew of a freighter. The Black Freighter, was it? No, The Black Tanker! And I remembered the name before I googled it. (With Silver Chief, I had to google the title: the author is Jack O'Brian, who must have grown up to become Patrick O'Brian.) I tried to second someone's commendation of the Silver Chief but am not qualified to leave a comment without first putting some money in the collection box.

Anyhow the strange fate referred to has to do with Pease. There are lots of titles for sale at ABE books but they are all German translation. No used US editions that I could find. Apparently he wrote some SF stories, too. I will have to check him out at Wikipedia. Anyone else ever had a crush on either author?
